The biggest sacrifice one can give for their country is to give their life for it. The second biggest sacrifice one can give is to give one's child to the service, and the child gives their life. This is what the Gold Star Mothers have done, given their children who have lost their lives in the service to their country.

The concept of a Gold Star Mother began in World War II when blue banners were hung in the windows of families who had a son or daughter in the service. When the son or daughter lost their life in service, a gold star was placed on the blue banner.

We would like to pay tribute to our Gold Star Mothers:

Grace Fleming
Mary Herrick
Natalie Knight
Genevieve Shubbuck

President Roosevelt declared the last Sunday in September to be celebrated as Gold Star Mothers Day. This is a tradition which the V.F.W. is proud to observe. However, the V.F.W. honors not only Gold Star Mothers, but all Gold Star Parents.
